Have you ever reached a point in your life where your son / daughter, now almost a teenager, says to him: “I don’t know what sport I should practice. All my age are doing something and I don’t know what to answer when they ask me”
This is a question that is not always easy to answer suddenly.
In the world of sports there are many options and for every sport there is the best state-of-the-art team and if you really think about this then this question shouldn’t be that difficult to answer.
You suddenly realize that you have never paid attention to that side of your child’s training and don’t really know either. What answer do you give to your child?
This was the question I was faced with many years ago and to be honest I never thought about this before that day.
Of course, what immediately came to mind was: Which sport in the world earns the most money! But is that really what matters?
Then we had a discussion about the pros and cons of each sport that was played in the neighborhood, of course.
Many renowned sports champions have their offspring doing the same type of sport as they did, which most of the time works well, but it’s not always a “father-father-son-like” case to get to the top.
Different factors must be taken into account when making a decision, and sometimes a quick response must be reached, because children can be very demanding.
If you don’t see a clear and obvious decision, perhaps you should reflect on the following criteria that might help:
1. Expenses to start and maintain equipment for the specific type of sport. Some types of sports can have a VERY expensive capital design to start.
2. Your child’s physical condition, for example. height, weight, physical, visual / auditory state, etc.
3. Logistics for sports facilities.
If you have observed and perhaps noticed your child’s interest in any sport, that will obviously be the number one factor to consider. If not, there are several ways to help and motivate you in the right direction. No, repeat, do not try to force your child to practice the sport you want.
