Yoga is of Indian origin. Its history goes back to the Pre-Era. The four Vedas are the oldest texts in India. Yoga was mentioned in the Vedas, implying that its history is older than the Vedas. In those days, it was an aid to spiritual elevation. In the scrutiny of previous yogic treatises, yogic kriyas (techniques) were used for self-improvement and not for health improvement.
Yoga is practiced worldwide now. It is being used as a physical exercise system. Yogic kriyas are used to address psychosomatic illnesses like stress, depression, hypertension, and other health related illnesses. By ranking websites, we found yoga to be a subcategory in the Health & Fitness category. It is clear that it became a health related issue. But it is not a health related issue. Its dimension is more. To understand that dimension and obtain the maximum benefits from yogic kriyas, one must learn it from the perspective of the ancient yoga treatises. For this same purpose, one should learn the classical yoga treatises.
The gurus of ancient India taught yoga without accepting any consideration or with a meager consideration that was affordable for the students of those times. Gurus accepted an affordable amount for the student. The quantity or Guru Thatchana (the quantity given by the student) was decided by the student and not by the Gurus. Money was not the motive in those days.
The Guru-Sysya (Master-disciple) system has now been manipulated. It has become a lucrative business today. Yoga has been institutionalized, which was not the case before. The leader of the institute is the Guru and will never pass on the knowledge he has. It will employ some teachers who have partial mastery of the subject. Then the students will not get the full knowledge. Therefore, the true knowledge is stuck with someone who will not transfer it for some reason or another.
The origin of any yoga is the yoga treatises. The modern Guru selects one or some of the techniques of the ancient yogic treatises and modifies them slightly and gives them a new name. He will use that name for a patent. This is how there are so many yoga brands available and so many institutes are marketing those brands. Knowledge belongs to the sages of yesteryear and yoga institutes sell it as their product.
If you are ready to make some effort to gain that knowledge by learning from those ancient treatises, you can avoid these intermediaries. No contemporary guru gets his knowledge from his own research. If you do any research, the findings are related to the benefits of making a kriya from the previous era. There are thousands upon thousands of yoga techniques available in the scriptures. One’s life is not enough to learn and practice them all. By learning them through the scriptures, we could understand them, identify them with the yoga brands available, and practice some of them that are right for us. Therefore, scripture study is mandatory for anyone who is planning to practice yoga.
We now know clearly that studying the yogic scriptures will give us two main benefits.
We can understand yoga in a broader dimension to obtain comprehensive benefits.
We learn yoga directly from the scriptures without intermediaries.
